Latest Updates from Our Project:

Cover Art Is Here!
almost 9 years ago – Tue, Jul 21, 2015 at 08:15:43 AM

Behold the shiny new cover art for Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated! The artist did a great job evoking his cover for the first edition while still making it clear this is a new and distinct book.

For comparison, check out the first and second edition covers side by side:

I'm really happy with the end result. It maintains all the feel and branding of the original while still being easy to distinguish when shrunk down to Amazon thumbnail size.

Meanwhile, I'm 44% of the way through primary photography. Along the way, the cookbook is expanding a smidge. Instead of the originally promised 120 recipes, it's now closer to 140. The final book will still be 280 pages with 100 pages of photographs because that part of the budget is set in stone. To make room, some of the photo pages include more than one dish.

As an example, check out this dessert-heavy page depicting TARDIS interior hex windowpane cookies in the foreground and a lemon blueberry custard in the middle. (Plus hints of the Boarding School Professor's Tea Stone Fruit Tart and Burnt Custard Sun Peach Melba in the background. Don't worry - those two recipes will have separate photos of their own.)

Hi there! I hope those of you in the US had a great 4th of July weekend.

As I said in my previous updates, this summer is dedicated to nonstop food photography. I’m incredibly pleased with the quality upgrade between the 1st and 2nd editions.

In addition to replacing all of the photographs in the 1st edition, I’ve also replaced even more of the recipes than I originally intended. At this point, you’re darn near getting a whole new book.

For example, the photo and recipe quality of S1E4: Aliens of London has gone from this:

To this:

Check out the new Series One/1st Chapter table of contents from the 2nd edition versus the 1st edition.

To make them easier to find, I've put the recipes appearing in both cookbooks in italics.

Second edition recipes that are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, or paleo friendly are marked in parenthesis. (There'll be a special index at the back of the book where you can look up recipes by your own dietary needs.)

Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated - the 2nd Edition Whovian Cookbook

S1E4: Aliens of London - Slitheen Pretzel Buns (recommended to be served with sentient ham mermaid meat, as shown above) (vegetarian)

S1E5: World War III - Lattice Pear Pastry Slitheens (vegan)

S1E6: Dalek - Dalek Thai Summer Rolls (vegan, gluten free)

S1E7: The Long Game - Satellite 5 Mystery Takeout Noodles* (vegan, gluten free)

S1E8: Father's Day - Working Class Wedding Canapes

S1E9-10: The Empty Child/the Doctor Dances - Wartime Cheese & Potato Dumplings with Fried Spam Slices* (vegetarian, gluten free - except for the Spam, of course!)

S1E11: Boom Town - Slitheen Eggs* (+ seasoned buckwheat noodles to serve on, adding to the original recipe) (vegetarian, gluten free)

S1E12: Bad Wolf - Bad Wolf Cheese Crackers (vegetarian)

vs

Dining With the Doctor: The Unauthorized Whovian Cookbook, 1st Edition

Chapter 1 Table of Contents - Eccleston

S1E1: Rose - Nestene Consciousness [Now in the Cocktails Chapter]

S1E2: The End of the World - The Last Human Fruit Leather

S1E3: The Unquiet Dead - Charles Dickens Own Christmas Punch [Now in the Cocktails Chapter]

S1E4: Aliens of London - Slitheen Killing Beans on Toast

S1E5: World War III - Slitheen Skin Suits

S1E6: Dalek - Banana Dalek

S1E7: The Long Game - Satellite 5 Mystery Takeout Noodles*

S1E8: Father's Day - Pete Tyler’s Health Tonic

S1E9-10: The Empty Child/the Doctor Dances - Wartime Cheese & Potato Dumplings with Fried Spam Slices*

S1E11: Boom Town - Slitheen Eggs*

S1E12: Bad Wolf - Big Brother House Bad Wolf Brand Human Chow Cookies

S1E13: The Parting of the Ways - The Mad Dalek Emperor’s All Seeing Eye

As you can see, two of the original cookbook’s recipes have been moved to the Cocktails chapter and replaced in the episode-by-episode narrative with new recipes. Of the rest, everything but the Satellite 5 Mystery Takeout Noodles, Slitheen Eggs, and Wartime Cheese & Potato Dumplings with Fried Spam Slices has been replaced with a new recipe.

That's 10 new recipes in the 1st chapter alone.

If you own An Unexpected Cookbook: The Unofficial Book of Hobbit Cookery, you can no doubt tell I’m using the same marathon strategy of having an entire chapter photographed together. This is actually more of a hassle than photographing everything dish by dish, but I really like the seasonal continuity you get, for instance, by having a hint of the Summer Squash TARTis and Cassandra's Moisturized Mozzarella Pizza in the background of the Dalek Crustless Quiche. When you see Cassandra, a Slitheen, and a Dalek all in the same photo, you know you’re in Eccleston’s episodes.

6 Hours Left! Increase your pledge to $35+ to get your ebook months early!
almost 9 years ago – Tue, Jun 02, 2015 at 02:27:06 PM

Wow! Radio Times London’s 4 page article didn’t just nudge us up to the 300 backer goal. It blew us right past that goal and halfway to 400!

I’ll be honest. As an American Whovian, I feel some extra validation when I get love from UK media. If British Doctor Who fans like my recipes as much as the Americans, I can tell I’m doing something right.  :)

Get your ebook early for only $6

One last reminder, if you backed at the $29 level, for only $6 more you can not only get the postcards and ebook, your ebook will also be delivered as soon as I get the files to the printer. That means you can preview it in electronic form months before the physical books finish rolling off the presses.

Include Doctors 8-12

Full color printing is crazily expensive, so every penny counts. If we can get this Kickstarter up to $14,000 before it ends, I'll include a special recipe for Paul McGann’s 8th Doctor. After all, his Big Finish audio adventures bridged the gap between the Classic series and New Who. Eight deserves some love, too.

Please share the Kickstarter and, if you're backing at the $10 or $29 levels, consider bumping it up to $35. The extras are worth it!

Kitchen Overlord’s Morning Show Minions
almost 9 years ago – Mon, Jun 01, 2015 at 03:49:00 AM

I was super excited to vworp vworp onto Good Morning Sacramento this morning for a segment about Kitchen Overlord and the Doctor Who Cookbook Kickstarter! (Since they don't use embeddable YouTube, click here to check it out.)

With only 50 hours left in the Kickstarter, I’m doing everything in my power to get the word out to any last minute backers. If we hit 300 total backers, everyone at the $35 and up level gets their ebook months early plus some adorable Whovian postcards by artist Tom Gordon, whose work will also appear in the book.

Dining With the Doctor: Regenerated has been all over the NerdSphere during the Kickstarter.

In addition to the TV appearance, I was interviewed for the Earth Station One and Gallifrey Pirate Radio podcasts.

You can also check out interviews and articles from:

  • The Daily Dot interviewed not only interviewed me, but also posted two preview recipes
  • MinionFeedinjg 101, which had 5 year old 12 year old, and grownup chefs test three
  • Hello Giggles, which called the cookbook “Genius.”
  • Geek X Girls, which took a break from Cosplay coverage to whet your tastebuds.
  • Doctor Who Worldwide made us their Kickstarter Of the Week.
  • Nerd Reactor once more showed Kitchen Overlord some geeky love.
  • That’s Nerdalicious used the Weeping Angel Cake as an excuse to remind people there’s a lot of Whovian goodness in the cookbook.
  • While Mighty Mega used the Exploding TARDIS cookies for the same purpose.
  • Leigh Schulman interviewed me about indie publishing in general and geek cookbooks in particular.

Other sites that spread the love include:

You still have 50 hours left to share the Kickstarter with your friends. Let’s get the total backers up to 300 by Tuesday!

We made it! Dining With The Doctor: Regenerated is Funded!
almost 9 years ago – Sun, May 31, 2015 at 10:11:35 PM

I’m so excited! Thanks to you, we have the funds to print this book!

THE 300 (BACKERS, NOT SPARTANS)

We’re not going to reach the more ambitious stretch goals, but I really want to give you guys something extra just because we made it.

If we hit 300 backers before the Kickstarter ends, everyone at the $35 level and above will get the Matt Smith and Daleks vs Cybermen postcards that would’ve been the $15K and $18K stretch goals.

Oh, that’s not enough love for you $35 and up folks? Well how about this?

$35 AND ABOVE BACKERS GET THEIR EBOOK MONTHS EARLY

If you’ve got an extra $6 to spare, the 85 of you backing at the $29 level can not only get a PDF ebook version in addition to your print book, but also get that electronic version as soon as I send the book's files to the printers. That means you’ll get the ebook months ahead of the print book. (Mostly because it takes months for the printers to do their work. It’s a slow industry.)

For the 52 of you backing at the $10 level, this is a blatant incentive to tempt you into also getting the print book. :)

GET EXTRAS VIA BACKERKIT

A few of you wonderful people have asked how to order just posters or extra copies of the books. When the Kickstarter ends, I’m setting up a Backerkit with those as add-ons.

While I’m at it, I also plan on using Backerkit’s Preorder Store so I can continue taking orders from people who didn’t find out about the Kickstarter in time.

Amazon is persnickety about not letting small presses set up book preorders, so I’m thankful for Backerkit filling that void. When the books come in, Kickstarter orders will be filled first (because you made this possible!) then Backerkit preorders, and then everyone else can get their unsigned, postcardless copies from Amazon.

Keep sharing the link with your Doctor Who loving friends and help us reach that final goal of 300 backers before the clock runs out on Tuesday!
